What the evidence supports
Finniss and colleagues review placebo effects as psychobiological events shaped by therapeutic context. Wager et al. report placebo-related changes in pain experience and pain-related brain activity. Benedetti and colleagues review nocebo mechanisms in which negative expectation can worsen symptoms such as pain.
What it does not establish
These sources do not show that belief controls physiology at will, that expectation can override material conditions, or that placebo/nocebo mechanisms generalize identically across every symptom and disease.
