What the evidence supports
Mattson and Calabrese/Baldwin describe hormesis as a biphasic dose-response pattern in which low-level stress or exposure can activate adaptive responses while higher exposure can produce different or adverse effects.
What it does not establish
These reviews do not establish that every stressor produces beneficial hormesis in humans, that more exposure produces more adaptation, or that a hormetic dose can be generalized across people and contexts.
